Introduction to School of Law and Humanities
As a bastion of century-old cultural legacy and academic integrity, School of Law and Humanities enjoys a long history of liberal arts education in China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing (CUMTB). Rooted in its fertile soil of humanities for 110 years, the school was founded in April 2004 and flourished in the new era.
Over the past two decades, adhering to the university motto “Bright Virtues to Perfection, Hard Working and Practice”, the school has dedicated itself to teaching and education, academic research, talent cultivation, and social services in the realm of humanities and social sciences. Centering on cultivating talents with both a sense of patriotism and an international perspective, the school has fostered and dispatched over 4,000 graduates to serve the cause of the Party and the construction of our country.
There are three departments, Department of Public Administration, Department of Foreign Languages and Department of Law, three university-level research institutions, namely, Center for Anti-corruption of CUMTB, the Mining Law Research Center, and the Institute for Common Prosperity, as well as a Public Administration Lab. of Emergency Management and Disaster Policy, and the Secretariat of Primary-level Security Emergency Management Committee of COSHA.
Currently, the school boasts a first-level doctoral program in Public Administration, two academic master’s programs in Public Administration, and Foreign Languages and Literature; four professional master’s programs including Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) in English, Juris Master (law), and Juris Master (non-law); and three undergraduate majors in Public Administration, English, and Law. Among them, Public Administration is designated as a National First-Class major, while the English and Law as Beijing First-Class majors. Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Languages is responsible for delivering foreign language courses to all non-English undergraduate and post-graduate students across the university.
As of March 2024, there are 85 faculty members in our school, 77 of whom are full-time teachers, including 10 professors, 30 associate professors and researchers; 49% of the teachers have doctoral degrees, and 40% of them have overseas learning and studying experience. There are a lot of honorable titles among the faculty, such as one national famous teacher of ideological and political education, one Beijing famous teacher, three Beijing famous teachers of ideological and political education, two Beijing outstanding lecturers of specialized courses, and two “Youth Talents of National Governance” of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League.
In the past five years, teachers of the school have presided over more than 60 government-sponsored projects at national or provincial/ministerial levels, such as National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Social Science Foundation of China, the Humanities and Social Science Foundation of the Ministry of Education, and Beijing Social Science Foundation. They have also completed more than 80 non-government sponsored projects entrusted by the Party and government organizations, state-owned enterprises, and non-profit organizations.
There are 1,604 students enrolled in the school, including 538 undergraduates, 336 full-time postgraduates, 698 part-time postgraduates and 32 doctoral students. In the past five years, students have won many awards, such as the National Second Prize in the “Challenge Cup” College Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition, the Silver Prize in the China International “Internet +” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the Silver Prize in the National Foreign Language Proficiency Competition for College Students (Interpretation Session), etc. They have also made noteworthy achievements in National MPA Case Competition, National English Competition for College Students, Beijing Moot Court Competition for College Students and so on.
Upholding the humanistic spirit of “The way of great learning consists in manifesting one’s bright virtue”, the school is committed to cultivating qualified citizens and pillars of society in the new era who are aspirant, upright, innovative, and have all-round moral, intellectual, physical, and aesthetical grounding with a hard-working spirit.
