Department of Public Administration

     The Department of Public Administration of China University of Mining and Technology-Beijing was originally affiliated to the Department of Social Sciences, School of Basic Science. In October 2011, the Department of Administrative Management was established under the School of Law and Humanities. In April 2020, the Department of Administrative Management was officially upgraded to the Department of Public Administration, which, thereafter, has been dedicated to the education, academic research, talent cultivation, and social services of public administration, becoming the research forefront of humanities and social sciences in CUMTB.

        The Department of Public Administration adheres to the idea of integrating into the mainstream as well as developing unique characteristics for future development, and actively participates in the collaborative construction of the university’s disciplines in the Double First-Class Initiative. Characterized by public safety and emergency management, the department is gradually becoming a major feature and brand of CUMTB.

        The Department of Public Administration offers an undergraduate program in Public Administration, academic Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Public Management, and a professional Master’s program in Public Administration (MPA), having established an integrated talent cultivation system that supports consecutive undergraduate’s, master’s, and doctoral studies.

        The Department of Public Administration first began to enroll undergraduate students majoring in administrative management in 2002, academic and professional graduate students in 2006, and doctoral students in 2016. So far, it has cultivated more than 1,000 highly skilled and versatile professionals. The undergraduate administration major was rated as the first-class undergraduate major in Beijing in 2021 and was awarded the national first-class undergraduate major in 2022.

The Department of Public Administration boasts professional faculty with strong academic ability and a well-balanced academic background. By 2023, there had been 22 full-time teachers, including 6 professors (researchers) and 14 associate professors (senior engineers and associate researchers). Senior titles account for 91% of the total faculty. All the full-time members hold doctorate degrees, and many of them have post-doctoral work experience. They are mainly from well-known universities at home and abroad, such as Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Southwest Jiaotong University, China University of Political Science and Law, Nara Women’s University, etc. Many of them have won various honors, such as the second prize of National Teaching Achievement Award, the Outstanding Teacher and Team of the Ministry of Education, the Outstanding Teacher and Team of Beijing Curriculum-based Ideological and Political Education, the Top-quality Undergraduate Course of Beijing universities, and the Outstanding Major Course of Beijing universities.

The Department of Public Administration features a series of high-level scientific research platforms. A number of university-level research institutions such as the Coal Research Institute, the Clean Government Research Center, and the Common Prosperity Research Institute are affiliated to the Department of Public Administration. Core researchers of these organizations come from the Department of Public Administration. Besides, the department also houses the secretary office of the grassroot-level Safety and Emergency Management Professional Committee under China Occupational Safety and Health Association. After 20 years of development, the Department of Public Administration has made outstanding achievements in related fields and established influential research teams in public security and emergency management, national supervision and clean governance, rural revitalization and common prosperity, social organization and social governance, and ecological environment governance. In the past five years, the Department of Public Administration has undertaken more than 50 projects entrusted by the National Social Science Foundation, the National Natural Science Foundation, the Humanities and Social Science Project of the Ministry of Education, the Beijing Social Science Foundation, public departments and enterprises; published more than 100 papers in prestigious journals; and won more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial awards. The faculty has long been involved in governance practice and policy advice, providing relevant departments, especially the public sector, with a large number of social services. Many faculty members have won honors such as outstanding talents of the Organization Department of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee and Young Talents of Beijing National Governance.

The world is currently undergoing unprecedented changes, with a profound reshaping of the global governance system and an accelerated evolution of the international landscape. Socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, and China is comprehensively modernizing its governance system and capacity. The Department of Public Administration will continue to pursue public values and public interests, undertake the mission of the time and important tasks of public management research, and remain true to its original aspirations while forging ahead.
